The aim of our management is to have the animals in the right place at the right time. With cattle, it’s easy, with sheep, it can be frustrating to say the least.
Some of our more defiant sheep seem to see an electric fence not as an impassable barrier but as a bright, glowing exit sign. They duck their heads and simply keep moving forwards to freedom. We will put them back, put up an extra electrical tape and they will add a hop to the duck and escape again.
After years of frustration we may finally be gaining some measure of control. It may be as simple as stronger, stretchier electrical tape gates. Could we have tried this five years ago? Absolutely, but we didn’t..!
