When it comes to calving we do not like to intervene unless it is absolutely necessary, but last week it was. We came across one of our heifers with two little back feet protruding out of her - a breach birth stalled indefinitely.
We did not hold high hopes but we brought her into the yards, got everything into position and did the best we could.
Angles are usually more important than force in this situation and fortunately we were able to manoeuvre the calf in such a way to release its hips. Things began to look much brighter.
We pulled the calf the rest of the way into the world but both mum and baby were understandably shocked. Thankfully after a bit of coaxing, cajoling and milking the bond was made. A week later, you cannot pick them from any other pair in the mob.
