Every year we bring our yearlings into the yards to determine which of them meet the standards we have set for our herd. If they are heifers we will keep them as future breeders; if they are steers they will be processed through our butchery over the next year.
There are only a few days a year where we bring the whole herd into the yards so even though it is an all day exercise, sometimes dusty, sometimes muddy it is enjoyable all the same.
Besides there is no alternative. The only way is get a true assessment of an animal is to get truly hands on. Some jobs cannot be done remotely.
