End of the drought

May 27, 2020Sidney Johnson

Another dry period has been broken with good falls of rain in March and April - the grass is plentiful, the cattle are fat and we can restart our supply of beef.

More big news; with restrictions easing across NSW and the ACT we will also be back at the EPIC markets this Saturday! We will still be focusing on deliveries but if markets are your thing we have you covered again

We are making a few changes to how our stall operators to keep everyone safe. We will not be accepting cash for the foreseeable future (card only and we will no longer be able to wrap your order in newspaper to minimise the time you have to spend at the stall. Finally, we ask that you only handle the meat you want to buy and remember that it is still all about distance :)

That is it for the announcements so I would like to end with our reflections on this latest drought.

To keep it short, we are extremely pleased with how we fared throughout. Two years ago we had 250 breeding cows and 100 ewes and today we have 270 and 140. Through holistic planned grazing we were able to grow enough grass to ensure that sheep and cattle were never lacking. We did not cut or buy any hay. We did not watch our soil blow away or, when it did rain, wash away. We have not spread any fertiliser or applied chemicals.

It is inevitable we will face this again but it is not something to be afraid of. Prepare, plan and stay adaptable
