The beginning of winter has a very different feel compared to last year. It is wetter, warmer and greener.
We have hardly had a frost, which is very unusual for our valley, so there is still enough warmth in the soil for the grass to take advantage of the plentiful moisture and grow. The drizzly rain and cold wind makes it feel like winter but the colours are brighter, less muted than typical.
The frosts will come and the grass will respond accordingly but it has already captured energy in abundance to ensure the animals will be well fed until the season changes again.
