Calving is underway with gangs of little calves racing up and down the hills with their fretful mothers in tow.
We keep a watchful eye over proceedings from a distance but unless it is absolutely necessary for the life of the cow or calf we do not intervene in any way.
Cattle and their ancestors have been giving birth forever and this genetic memory is a much better guide than a well-intentioned helping hand. Get too close to a calving cow and her fight or flight instinct will kick in, labour will slow or stop and the possibility of complications only increases.
I am sure we do not always make the right call on when to intervene but we trust our animals.
